    Touching and Not Touching

Between The Couch and The Circle

This Training Day is open to all current Leaders, IT Leaders, Regional Coordinators and those interested in becoming Leaders and costs £50 to attend.

You are invited to book your place for the Spring Training Day on Friday 17th May, which will be held at the offices of the RCOG in London.

I encourage you to come to this Training Day as we welcome John Schlapobersky, Consultant Psychotherapist and Member of the Institute of Group Analysis.

The presentation looks into the contrasting dynamics of touch in medicine - the point of physical contact between practitioner and patient – and touch in psychotherapy where the word refers to key moments of emotional communication.  In dynamic psychotherapy ‘touched’ stands for empathy and attunement.  The body is not touched but, unless the person in therapy is touched in heart, soul or spirit, there will be little purchase on the problems under review.  Physicians in the IPM call on ‘touch’ in both its meanings and deploy the physical examination to enhance, enrich or enlighten the psychosexual enquiry.  Practitioners meeting in Seminar groups bring these dynamics into their exchange and the Seminar Leaders, in turn, bring these dynamics into the Training Day.

John will call on the title of his recent book, ‘From The Couch To The Circle:  Group-Analytic Psychotherapy In Practice’, to shed light on how we use ‘parallel process’ to explore issues in the body-mind interface, as they are reflected between these different settings.

John is a Training Analyst and Faculty member at the Institute of Group Analysis in London and was formerly Consultant Psychotherapist to the Medical Foundation for Victims of Torture (now Freedom From Torture) and Traumatic Stress Clinic, University College Hospital, London.  He is in private practice at the Bloomsbury Psychotherapy Practice, London.

In the first part of the morning there will be an update and discussion on training and the day will run as follows:
